Earnings Brief — What Changed Since the Last Results
What changed at a company since its last results — guidance, insider trades, sentiment — and when the next ones are.
/api/v1/earnings-brief/{ticker}Overview
One call per ticker answers the question you ask before an earnings date: what has changed at this company since its last results, and when are the next ones? The last results are dated from SEC EDGAR — the latest 8-K with item 2.02 (Results of Operations), or the latest 10-Q/10-K when the company files no 2.02 — and become the start of the comparison `window`. From there the brief reads four blocks, each with its own `status` (changed, new, unchanged, none or unavailable) and `reason`, so a missing source never hides the others: `guidance` (management outlook filed since then, including the results release itself, compared with the previous comparable guidance), `insiders` (voluntary open-market Form 4 trades), `sentiment` (how the social mood moved from the days right after the results to now) and `nextResults` (the scheduled date from the earnings calendar, about nine weeks ahead). `timeline` puts results, guidance and insider events in date order, each with the SEC link behind it.
Use it toPrepare for an earnings date, or check whether anything material changed since the last report, in one request.
The `lastResults.date` is the SEC filing date (`dateBasis: sec_filing_date`): the release itself can precede it by a few hours, and a few companies also file preliminary figures under item 2.02. Guidance `change` values: `raised`, `lowered`, `withdrawn`, `range_adjusted` (same midpoint, different range — 90–110 to 95–105), `maintained`, `initiated` (the first numeric outlook for that period, e.g. next quarter) and `unknown`. Only a revision makes the guidance block `changed`; a company that simply guides the next quarter, as most do every quarter, reads `new`. Guidance is read for every company at no extra cost: `method: ai_extraction` when our prepared Company Guidance profile already holds the last release, otherwise `rule_based` — the release (8-K exhibit 99.1) and the one before it are read from SEC EDGAR and their figures compared by fixed rules (metric, period and GAAP basis must match). Rules can miss an unusual wording, so every item carries its `evidence` sentence; `summary.unreadExhibits` counts releases without a readable press-release exhibit. Insider totals count only voluntary open-market purchases (code P) and sales (code S); tax withholding, plan purchases and administrative codes are left out, and Rule 10b5-1 plan sales are reported in `plannedSalesExcluded` instead of being counted. `insiders.asOf` is when every company's Form 4 filings were last checked against the SEC (a full pass takes a few hours); `stale` turns true when that check is over 24 hours old, so a `none` is never presented as current when it is not. Distinct `buyers`/`sellers` are counted by the owner's SEC `cik`. Sentiment uses our daily history when it covers the days after the results (`method: daily_history`); otherwise it reads posts from X for the three days after the results and for the last three days and scores both with the same word-based classifier (`method: x_search`, change threshold 0.15, at least 5 posts per window). The post-results window is read once and kept. `nextResults` searches the Nasdaq calendar about nine weeks ahead (`lookaheadBusinessDays`, `searchedThrough`); Nasdaq publishes dates roughly six weeks in advance, so a company reporting later reads `not_scheduled_yet`, and `unavailable` means the calendar itself could not be read — never a guess. Foreign private issuers without 8-K or 10-Q filings are dated from their latest 20-F/40-F. Responses are cached privately for 15 minutes, and not at all when a source failed. When SEC EDGAR cannot be read the response is HTTP 503 with `Retry-After` rather than an empty brief. Unknown query parameters return HTTP 400; an unmapped ticker returns HTTP 404 with suggestions. Every field is declared in `/api/v1/schema` as `EarningsBriefResponse`.
